To do in the area
The Alpujarras are rich with culture and nature. Our community is less than an hour away from Granada with the world famous Alhambra. There are also many hikes within easy reach from us, the highest of which is Mulhacen, 3417m. On the way to hike destinations by regular bus service, you can visit many traditional Moorish villages. Or if you prefer, the Mediterranean beaches are only 45 minutes away.
History of the area
This valley was populated by the Berber people from Morocco over 1000 years ago, who created the traditional acequias, our irrigation system. They built the terraces, farms and villages that make up this beautiful valley, in short, they created a paradise out of the desert. It was the last stand of the Moors in Spain, the front line in the civil war, and the meeting of the African and European continental plates, always on the edge… The edge is described in permaculture as the most diverse and creative place, the meeting of two systems.
Since the 1980s, the area has become the home to many alternatively minded people who wished to come back to the land. This resulted in the development of an unintentional community now know as Cigarrones.
